The true tone adjusts the white balance to suit the ambient lighting and wide colour. The iPhone doesn’t come with the 3D touch just like the iPhone XR, but it uses the haptic touch which is supported by iOS 13. It lacks the pressure sensitivity of the 3D touch.
Design
It was carved out of a glass body that comes in six different colours.
- White
- Black
- Yellow
- Red
- Purple
- Green
The last two are the new colours introduced. The phone is almost the same as the XR. Apple claims it was carved out of the most durable glass ever in a smartphone. The durable glass comes with an improved water resistance (IP68) for more durability. The spatial audio offers an immersive sound experience and supports Dolby atmos.
- A precision machine 7000 series aluminium frame wrap around a glass
- 1-inch display
- Edge to edge display with slim bezels
- No home buttons
- OLED display instead of LCD
- Thicker bezels than the pro models
- It measures at 150.9mm tall, 75.7 mm wide and 8.3mm thick
- Weighs at 6.84 ounces
The back comes with a new design most especially due to the new dual camera system. There’s a new square shape camera bump that flows into the rest of the device. The rear lenses protrude slightly from the back because the elements are thicker than the body of the phone. The logo can be found in the middle of the device something popular among previous phones.
The Glass is more durable
Apple is saying this is the most durable glass ever for any smartphone in other words a high level of resistance to accidents. It’s advisable to have a protector because it’s still a glass prone to breakages, both glasses at the front and the back uses a “dual ion – exchange process” for durability.
Water and Dust Resistance
The rate is IP68 water resistance, this is up from IP67 in the iPhone XR. It’ll survive up to two metres (6.5 feet) and about 30 minutes submersion in water. The IP68 water resistance means the phone can withstand splashes, rain and moderate accidental exposure. Intentional water exposure must be avoided at all cost. Liquid damage to IOS devices is not covered by Apple’s warranty.
Display – iPhone 11 Review

- And more
This is an upgrade from iPhone XR which only allows personal shots in portrait mode. One of the improvements to the interface is the new experience that allows you to see and capture areas outside the frame using ultra-wide mode if you wish. It supports 2 x optical zoom out and digital zoom out of up to 5x. A new night mode was added which was designed to engage the phone’s processing capabilities. The new wide camera sensor captures crisps clear photos even in poor lighting. The night mode feature is like the night sight mode found in Google pixel devices.
Smart HDR
It captures natural looking more beautiful images with improved highlighted and shadow detail because of its machine learning features. A deep feature fusion was introduced which uses advanced machine learning techniques for pixel – by – pixel processing of:
- Photos
- Texture optimisation
- Details
- Noise
In a nutshell this phone offers an improved photographic capability over the XR. The 4K video recording is available with an extended dynamic range at 24, 30, or 60fps. You can use both cameras for video recording and using live swapping with a simple tap. Videos can be automatically recorded with a quick take video mode by holding down the button in the camera app with subject tracking and audio zoom features which matches audio to video framing for more dynamic sound.
The front facing camera is a new 12 – mega pixel camera which is 30 percent faster for face ID and works from various angles. It supports 120fps slo – mo video for the first time and supports next generation smart HDR for natural looks and records 4K videos at 60fps. A13 Bionic 7 – nanometre chip is installed along with a third-generation neural engine. This bionic as claimed by Apple is the smartest chip in a smartphone at 20 percent faster CPU and GPU compared to the A12. The CPU deliver more than 1 trillion operations per seconds with the aid of the new machine learning accelerators. The neural engine is faster than ever for real time photo and video analysis.
True Depth Camera and Face ID
Face ID is a biometric authentication system introduced in 2017 and it’s enabled by the true depth camera system. There’s an improvement to the true depth camera system’s hardware which makes it faster and able to work from a wider range of angles. It’s quicker and more efficient.
Face ID can be use for the following:
- Unlock your phone
- Access to third party passcode protected apps
- To confirm purchases from iTunes and app store
- To authenticate Apple, pay payments
The face ID functions through a set of sensors and camera called true depth camera system. A facial scan is created by projecting a dot projector of more than 30,000 invisible infrared dots onto your face which are then read by the camera.
The map of the face is relayed to the bionic processor and transformed into mathematical mode to ensure you’re the one trying to access the phone. Face ID uses infra-red which is the reason it works perfectly in low lighting conditions and even in the dark. The built-in illuminator ensures there’s always adequate light for a facial scan. Face ID works with:
- Hats
- Beards
- Glasses
- Sunglasses
- Scarves
- Make up
- And other accessories
You might decide to alter you look by growing some beards or hair growth, Face ID will detect minor facial changes over time and adjust and keep unlocking your phone.
Rear Camera
The upgraded dual lens camera system is the major new feature in the Phone. It includes:
- F/1, 8 6 – element
- 12 Mega pixel wide – angle lens
- 26mm focal length
- F/2.4 5 – element
The new ultra-wide angle is a perfect fit if you’re trying to get a landscape or architecture shot or fit more in the frame close up. This is possible because of the 120 degree field of view due to an app interface that display the whole field was included.
Portrait Mode
The camera was designed without a photo lens but still able to take portrait mode using other camera lenses. The two cameras in sync will create portrait mode photos by focusing on the photo with a blurred background which is similar to the effect you get with a DSLR. There are improvements to portrait mode because it works with:
- People
- Pets
- Food
- Other objects
Portrait Lighting
It support portrait lighting thereby the light effect of an image can be shifted using software. The feature has more lighting mode including:
- Natural
- Studio
- Contour
- Stage
- Stage Mono
- High – key Mono
Night Mode
The large sensor with 100 percent focus pixel that enables low light capabilities as night mode. This was designed to capture brighter pictures especially in low lighting environments. It’ similar to the Google’s night shift mode which brightens the picture with the aid of a software. The night mode comes up automatically in low lighting conditions without using a flash. The camera will take multiple images while the lens is steady with the optical image stabilisation.
Other Camera Features:
- A 36 percent brighter true tone flash
- 63 megapixel panoramas
- Wide Colour capture
- Live photos supports
- Advanced red eye correction
- Burst mode
A deep fusion feature will be introduced at some point. This will be a new image processing system which uses A13 bionic and neural engine. Deep fusion will be operated by an advanced learning machine techniques to do:
- Pixel by pixel
- Photo processing
- Texture optimisation
- Details
- Noise in each part of the image
Deep fusion is to improve indoors photos taken in poor lighting conditions. It activates automatically based on the lens and the level of light in the room instead of something you enabled manually.
Video Capabilities
The wide angle and ultra-wide angle lenses works perfectly in video mode. You also have the option to toggle between them with a tap when filming. The phone shoots 4K video at 60 frames per seconds. The camera captures four times scenes for better shots. It supports extended dynamic range when capturing video and the optical image stabilisation activates for video shots using the standard wide angle camera.
The audio zoom feature will match the audio to the video framing which produces a better sound when filming.
Quick Take
You’re able to record by holding down the shutter when in a photo mode with a new feature called quick mode. You’re able to capture a moment just switching from standard camera mode to video mode. When you activate the quick take while shooting outdoor the A13 bionic is able to use machine learning to track a moving subject automatically.
Face ID Security and Privacy
The 3D detail facial scan will prevent Face ID from being deceived by a photo mask or other facial imitation. Face ID will only unlock your phone when you look in your phone’s direction with your eyes open because of the “Attention Aware” security feature. Face ID is non-functional when:
- Asleep
- Eyes are closed
- When you’re unconscious
- When you look away from the phone
