The two new phones are like the iPhone XS and XS max, but designed with texture matte finishes. They are available in various colours such as:

  • Gold
  • Space Grey
  • Silver
  • And for the first time, a midnight green

Even though there aren’t many differences between these phones and their X’s counterparts, Apple claimed they were made from the most durable glass ever produced for a smart phone. The improved water resistance (IP68) boast of overall durability. An immersive sound experience is offered through the spatial audio support and Dolby Atmos is also supported.

One of the major differences between these phones and the other phones is the triple lens camera set up. It’s a:

  • 12 – megapixel ultra-wide angle,
  • Wide angle
  • Telephoto cameras

The field of view of this ultra-wide camera is 120 degrees. This produces better landscape shots and tight shots that captures more without any adjustments. The next generation smart HDR built into the camera intelligently recognise subjects in frames and relight them to give a natural look photo with more details. You’re able to see and capture the area outside the frame with the assistance of the ultra-wide-angle camera, this is due to the camera interface being overhauled.

The new night mode is a new feature for the processing capabilities to capture crisps, clear, bright photos even in poor lighting conditions, it’s like the night side mode found in Google’s devices. You can choose a wide and telephoto framing when in a portrait mode, the wider view is good for portraits of multiple objects.

There will be a new deep fusion feature in the IOS 13.2, this is an advanced learning technique for:

  • Pixel by pixel
  • Processing photos
  • Optimising textures
  • Details
  • Noise

The camera is also perfect for recordings with swapping available, the 4K recording with extended dynamic range is available at 24, 30 or 60fps. You can automatically record videos with subject tracking because of the quick take video mode which allows you to hold down the shutter’s button. The video framing audio is match with the audio zoom to produce a more dynamic sound.

There’s been an upgrade to the front facing true depth camera system with a 12- megapixel camera, this makes the face ID up to 30 percent faster and does work from different angles. The camera supports 120fps slo-mo for the first time, this allows users to capture slo-mo selfies. The true depth also supports next generation smart HDR for more natural looking photos and records 4K video at 60fps.

The phones boast of A13 Bionic 7 – nanometre chip along with a third generation neural engine. This happens to be the fastest chip ever in a smartphone as claimed by Apple with 20 percent faster CPU and GPU than the A12. The CPU delivers more than 1 trillion operations per seconds because of the new machine learning accelerator. The neural engine is faster than ever for real time photo and video analysis.

A new feature introduced is the spatial audio feature. Its function is to simulate surround sound to provide an impressive audio encounter. It also supports Dolby Atmos sound.

Display

The phones produce a super retina XDR display, this is the best display in any of the iPhone models as claimed by Apple. This super retina supports:

  • Dolby vision
  • HDR10
  • Wide colour gamut for unparalleled colour accuracy

The higher quality of the display is easily noticeable especially when compared to the LCD display, this was proven with highlights and shadows. White becomes whiter while black becomes darker because everything looks real. An improved in brightness is about 800 nits, normally it was about 625 in other phones.

Phones ambient light sensor are used to adjust the white balance because of True tone which matches the ambient lighting in the room thereby reducing eye strained especially for reading.

  • The iPhone 11 Pro resolution is 2436 x 1125 at 458 ppi
  • The iPhone 11 Pro max resolution is 2688 x 1242 at 458 ppi

The latest display from Apple is 15 percent more powerful and this contributes to the battery life gains in these models. Display mate, the testing and calibration firm testify that the iPhone Pro 11 max has the highest grade ever regarding display. It proclaimed that the iPhone Pro 11 max offers better display performance than any other smartphone.

Haptic Touch

The 3D touch which was invented with the introduction of the iPhone 6 no longer exist as one of the features in 2019 iPhone. They now feature a haptic touch which was introduced when the iPhone XR was produced. The haptic touch is almost the same as the 3D touch in terms of functionality but not pressure sensitive. There are no multiple functions for each press but regarding the haptic touch it’s a long press with haptic feedback.

A13 Bionic Processor

The A13 Bionic chip in these phones is the updated next generation chip which is faster and more efficient than the A12 Bionic chip in the previous generation iPhone and it’s the fastest chip ever used in a smartphone according to Apple.
