How to Edit Portraits on Your iPad

Enhance Your Portraits with a Tap

The Photos app on your iPad lets you easily adjust and refine your portraits. You can change lighting effects, depth of field, and even the focus point.

Adjusting Portrait Lighting

  1. Select Your Portrait: Tap on a portrait to view it full screen, then tap “Edit.”
  2. Choose a Lighting Effect: Tap the lighting icon and select from these options:
    • Natural Light: A classic look with a blurred background.
    • Studio Light: Bright and even lighting.
    • Contour Light: Dramatic shadows and highlights.
    • Stage Light: Spotlit subject against a dark background.
    • Stage Light Mono: Black and white version of Stage Light.
    • High-Key Light Mono: Grayscale subject on a white background (iPad Pro 11-inch 2nd gen or later, iPad Pro 12.9-inch 4th gen or later only).
  3. Save Your Edit: Tap “Done” to save your changes.

Fine-Tuning Portrait Lighting

On compatible iPad models (iPad Pro 11-inch 2nd gen or later, iPad Pro 12.9-inch 4th gen or later, iPad Air 5th gen), you can further adjust the intensity of your chosen lighting effect:

  1. Open Your Portrait: Tap on a portrait to view it full screen.
  2. Enable Lighting Adjustment: Tap the lighting icon to turn it yellow.
  3. Adjust Intensity: Drag the slider to increase or decrease the effect.
  4. Save Your Edit: Tap “Done” to save your changes.

Controlling Depth of Field

For portraits taken on compatible devices, you can adjust the background blur:

  1. Open Your Portrait: Tap on a portrait to view it full screen, then tap “Edit.”
  2. Adjust Depth: Drag the Depth Control slider to increase or decrease the background blur.
  3. Save Your Edit: Tap “Done” to save your changes.

Changing the Focus Point

On iPad, you can change the main subject of your portrait (taken on iPhone 13 or later with iOS 16 or later):

  1. Open Your Portrait: Tap on a portrait to view it full screen, then tap “Edit.”
  2. Select a New Subject: Tap on the desired subject in the photo.
  3. Adjust Depth: Use the Depth Control slider to fine-tune the background blur.
  4. Save Your Edit: Tap “Done” to save your changes.

Enjoy your enhanced portraits!

Note: To remove Portrait Lighting from a photo, tap “Edit,” then tap “Portrait” at the top of the screen.
