  • 7 inches wide (78.1mm)
  • 30 inches thick (7.65mm)

Water Resistance

The phones feature an IP68 water resistant rating, they can withstand a depth of up to six meters (19.7 feet) for up to 30 minutes, this is as the same as the iPhone 12 models.

Explaining the IP68 number, the 6 means, the dust resistance in other words, these phones can hold up dust, dirt and other particles therefore 6 is high based on the resistance level. The same thing goes for the 8 which is the water resistance level, IP68 means these phones can hold up splashes, rain and other water exposure longer.

Water resistance shouldn’t be taken lightly, it’s not a license to be careless, according to Apple these phones could deteriorate due to constant water immersion. If the phone is damaged due to water immersion, Apple’s warranty is invalid.

Display

All models have the same OLED super retina XDR display, they are flexible and extends right into the chassis of each device.

There’s a 2,000,000:1 contrast ration for blacker blacks and brighter white. There’s up to 1200 nits’ peak brightness for:

iPhone 13 Pro Max

  • A resolution of 2778 x 1284 by 458 pixels per inch

Wide colour supports brings vivid, true to life colours

True tone matches the white balance of the display to the ambient lighting. This is good for paper like viewing experience which makes it easier on the eyes. A support for the haptic touch is the fingerprint resistant oleophatic coating which provides haptic feedback as you interact with the display.

Display mate claims that the iPhone 13 has the best smartphone display ever. The phones therefore earn a grade of A+due to:

  • ProMmoton technology
  • HDR
  • Max Brightness
  • Colour accuracy
  • Constant Ratio
  • And More

Smaller Notch

The notch that houses the true depth camera is slimmer and 20 percent less wide compared to the notch used in the previous models. The comparison between iPhone 12 and 13 confirms that even though the notch is less wide it’s just a bit taller than the one in the 12 models.

The width of the notch was reduced to create more space on the screen, IOS seems not to be taken advantage of this extra space. There’s enough place to display battery’s percentage on the right side of the notch on the iPhone 13 Pro Max but not included in the display feature.

Apple implemented Pro motion technology for the first time in the 13 models because of a low power display backlighting. This was introduced to the iPad pro in 2018 and offers adaptive refresh rates that ranges from 10Hz to 120Hz.

The display refresh rate is based on what you have on the screen. If you’re reading from a website that’s static, the iPhone will use a lower refresh rate. If you are watching a movie or playing games or scrolling through a content, you’ll see a higher 120Hz refresh rate which provides a smoother and more responsive experience.

The speed of scrolling is matched by the Pro Motion technology because it’s able to accelerate and decelerate to match scrolling speed.

Ceramic Shield

Apple is stuck on ceramic shield, a material that offers better protection for the iPhone 13 models. An infusing nano was used to create the ceramic cover – ceramic crystal in a glass. Ceramic crystal is manipulated for optimisation for clarity while maintaining toughness with the display created in partnership with corning.

Apple claims that the ceramic shield is tougher compared to other smartphones glass. It has a dual-ion exchange process which ensures protection against scratches and wear and tear.

A15 Bionic Chip

These models use the A15 new chip that offers a better performance and efficiency compared to the A14 chip used in the iPhone 12 models. The A15 chip has been rated by Apple as the fastest smartphone chip with two performance cores and four efficiency cores.

The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max A15 chip come with an additional 5-core GPU that is not available in the standard 13 models. It offers up to 50 percent graphic performance compared to any other smartphone chip.

The CPU in all 13 models offers the same capabilities. They are approximately 10 percent faster in single core performance and approximately 18 percent faster in multi core performance in comparison to iPhone 12 models.

Neural Engine

The 16-core neural engine’s performance is up to 15.8 trillion operations per seconds. Its powerful feature is compared to a cinematic mode and smart HDR 4.

True Depth Camera and Face ID

These models use the face ID for biometric authentication purposes. The facial recognition system was introduced in 2017. The face ID components are housed in the True Depth, camera system in the display notch.

Face ID can be used for various IOS tasks such as:

  • Unlocking the iPhone
  • Allowing access to third-party passcode protected apps
  • App purchases confirmation
  • Apple pays payments, authentication

Face ID works in conjunction with a set of sensor and cameras, a dot projector project more than 30,000 invisible infrared dots onto the surface of the skin in order to create a 3D facial scan which maps the curves and planes of each face with the scan read by an infrared camera.

The A15 chip works in conjunction with the facial depth map and it is transformed into a mathematical model which the phone uses to authenticate identity.

Face ID works in:

  • Low light
  • In the dark
  • Hats
  • Beards
  • Glasses
  • Sunglasses
  • Scarves
  • Other accessories that partially obscure the face.

Front Camera Features

The front and rear cameras have the same features which are the 12-megapixel f/2.2 camera in the True Depth system. The iPhone 13 along with the A15 chip support many of the photographic capabilities that are available with the rear cameras which includes:
