  • Water exposure

Apple said that persistence water exposure and dust will damage the device.

Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos

A new feature introduced is the spatial audio feature. Its function is to simulate surround sound to provide an impressive audio encounter. It also supports Dolby Atmos sound.

Display

The phones produce a super retina XDR display, this is the best display in any of the iPhone models as claimed by Apple. This super retina supports:

  • Dolby vision
  • HDR10
  • Wide colour gamut for unparalleled colour accuracy

The higher quality of the display is easily noticeable especially when compared to the LCD display, this was proven with highlights and shadows. White becomes whiter while black becomes darker because everything looks real. An improved in brightness is about 800 nits, normally it was about 625 in other phones.

Phones ambient light sensor are used to adjust the white balance because of True tone which matches the ambient lighting in the room thereby reducing eye strained especially for reading.

  • The iPhone 11 Pro resolution is 2436 x 1125 at 458 ppi
  • The iPhone 11 Pro max resolution is 2688 x 1242 at 458 ppi

The latest display from Apple is 15 percent more powerful and this contributes to the battery life gains in these models. Display mate, the testing and calibration firm testify that the iPhone Pro 11 max has the highest grade ever regarding display. It proclaimed that the iPhone Pro 11 max offers better display performance than any other smartphone.

Haptic Touch

The 3D touch which was invented with the introduction of the iPhone 6 no longer exist as one of the features in 2019 iPhone. They now feature a haptic touch which was introduced when the iPhone XR was produced. The haptic touch is almost the same as the 3D touch in terms of functionality but not pressure sensitive. There are no multiple functions for each press but regarding the haptic touch it’s a long press with haptic feedback.

A13 Bionic Processor

The A13 Bionic chip in these phones is the updated next generation chip which is faster and more efficient than the A12 Bionic chip in the previous generation iPhone and it’s the fastest chip ever used in a smartphone according to Apple. The two performance cores in the A13’s CPU is 20 percent faster and consumes 30 percent less power compare to the A12. The four efficiency cores are up to 20 percent faster and consumes about 40 percent less power.

Neural Engine

The real time photo and video analysis features the A13 chip next generation 8 -Core neural engine. The CPU is six times faster because of the machine learning accelerators which allows it to run faster thereby delivering more than 1 trillion operations per second. The Glass is more durable

Apple is saying this is the most durable glass ever for any smartphone in other words a high level of resistance to accidents. It’s advisable to have a protector because it’s still a glass prone to breakages, both glasses at the front and the back uses a “dual ion – exchange process” for durability.

Water and Dust Resistance

The rate is IP68 water resistance, this is up from IP67 in the iPhone XR. It’ll survive up to two metres (6.5 feet) and about 30 minutes submersion in water. The IP68 water resistance means the phone can withstand splashes, rain and moderate accidental exposure. Intentional water exposure must be avoided at all cost. Liquid damage to IOS devices is not covered by Apple’s warranty.

True Depth Camera and Face ID

Face ID is a biometric authentication system introduced in 2017 and it’s enabled by the true depth camera system. There’s an improvement to the true depth camera system’s hardware which makes it faster and able to work from a wider range of angles. It’s quicker and more efficient.

Face ID can be use for the following:

  • Unlock your phone
  • Access to third party passcode protected apps
  • To confirm purchases from iTunes and app store
  • To authenticate Apple, pay payments

The face ID functions through a set of sensors and camera called true depth camera system. A facial scan is created by projecting a dot projector of more than 30,000 invisible infrared dots onto your face which are then read by the camera.

The map of the face is relayed to the bionic processor and transformed into mathematical mode to ensure you’re the one trying to access the phone. Face ID uses infra-red which is the reason it works perfectly in low lighting conditions and even in the dark. The built-in illuminator ensures there’s always adequate light for a facial scan. Face ID works with:

  • Hats
  • Beards
  • Glasses
  • Sunglasses
  • Scarves
  • Make up
  • And other accessories

You might decide to alter you look by growing some beards or hair growth, Face ID will detect minor facial changes over time and adjust and keep unlocking your phone.

Rear Camera

The upgraded dual lens camera system is the major new feature in the Phone. It includes:

  • F/1, 8 6 – element
  • 12 Mega pixel wide – angle lens
  • 26mm focal length
  • F/2.4 5 – element

The new ultra-wide angle is a perfect fit if you’re trying to get a landscape or architecture shot or fit more in the frame close up. This is possible because of the 120 degree field of view due to an app interface that display the whole field was included.

Portrait Mode

The camera was designed without a photo lens but still able to take portrait mode using other camera lenses. The two cameras in sync will create portrait mode photos by focusing on the photo with a blurred background which is similar to the effect you get with a DSLR. There are improvements to portrait mode because it works with:

  • People
  • Pets
  • Food
  • Other objects

Portrait Lighting

It support portrait lighting thereby the light effect of an image can be shifted using software. The feature has more lighting mode including:

  • Natural
  • Studio
  • Contour
  • Stage
  • Stage Mono
  • High – key Mono

Night Mode

The large sensor with 100 percent focus pixel that enables low light capabilities as night mode. This was designed to capture brighter pictures especially in low lighting environments. It’ similar to the Google’s night shift mode which brightens the picture with the aid of a software. The night mode comes up automatically in low lighting conditions without using a flash. The camera will take multiple images while the lens is steady with the optical image stabilisation.

Other Camera Features:

  • A 36 percent brighter true tone flash
  • 63 megapixel panoramas
  • Wide Colour capture
  • Live photos supports
  • Advanced red eye correction

  • Pixel by pixel
  • Photo processing
  • Texture optimisation
  • Details
  • Noise in each part of the image

Deep fusion is to improve indoors photos taken in poor lighting conditions. It activates automatically based on the lens and the level of light in the room instead of something you enabled manually.

Video Capabilities

The wide angle and ultra-wide angle lenses works perfectly in video mode. You also have the option to toggle between them with a tap when filming. The phone shoots 4K video at 60 frames per seconds. The camera captures four times scenes for better shots. It supports extended dynamic range when capturing video and the optical image stabilisation activates for video shots using the standard wide angle camera.

YouTube player

The audio zoom feature will match the audio to the video framing which produces a better sound when filming.

Quick Take

You’re able to record by holding down the shutter when in a photo mode with a new feature called quick mode. You’re able to capture a moment just switching from standard camera mode to video mode. When you activate the quick take while shooting outdoor the A13 bionic is able to use machine learning to track a moving subject automatically.

Face ID Security and Privacy

The 3D detail facial scan will prevent Face ID from being deceived by a photo mask or other facial imitation. Face ID will only unlock your phone when you look in your phone’s direction with your eyes open because of the “Attention Aware” security feature. Face ID is non-functional when:

  • Asleep
  • Eyes are closed
  • When you’re unconscious
  • When you look away from the phone

IPHONE 8 VS IPHONE 8 PLUS – DESIGN

The two models look like its predecessor models. Both models boast of 4.7- and 5.5-inch displays with thick bezels both at the top and bottom. The front camera, speakers and sensors are located at the top of the camera. At the bottom you’ll find the home button with a taptic engine to mimic a button press. Touch ID was also built into the home button.

Even though it looks like the iPhone 7 models’ big sister, it has a distinguishing feature boasting of the most durable glass ever. This is an advantage over the iPhone 7 models, the rich depth, colour of the iPhone 8 was as a result of a seven-layer ink process which adds colour to the glass. An oleophobic coat wipes away smudges and fingerprints easily.

A stainless-steel internal frame holds the glass shell and display together. An aerospace grade 7000 series aluminium gives the phones a seamless look. Adequate signal is provided via nearly invisible antenna lines that cuts through the aluminium frame. The durable glass wrapped around a stainless-steel frame means it’s prone to being smashed to pieces if drops on a concrete floor. These phones did not pass the drop test, not even when tested from a waist level.

A mute and switch button can be found on the left-hand side and the right side houses the sleep/wake button. There are lighting ports and speakers’ holes at the bottom and no headphone jack, but Bluetooth enabled. WATER REISTANCE

They are both water and dust resistance, it has a water/dust resistance rating of IP67 which means they are dust proof and can withstand 1 metre of water (3.3 feet) of up to half an hour. Deliberate water exposure must be avoided at all cost even though the phones can withstand splashes, rainfall and limited water exposure.

TOUCH ID

It seems that based on Apple’s research they discover that there are dedicated customers who are much interested in the touch ID functionality. This probably explains why they still have the touch ID functionality for customers who are not ready to give up the finger-based authentication in favour of a new facial recognition that was introduced in the iPhone X series.

This touch ID is known as the second-generation touch ID which is fast and accurate. It serves as a biometric authentication method:

●        Low price tag

●        Excellent LCD display

●        Bright colours

●        iPhone XS level’s performance

Design

It’s similar to the 5.8 inch iPhone XS but has a 6.1 inch display. A mid size phone that sits between the iPhone XS and the 6.5 – inch XS max. It’s smaller than the iPhone 8 which it replaces but has a bigger screen. It measures:

●        150.9mm tall

●        75.7mm wide

●        8.3mm thick

●        Weights 194 grams

There’s a notch at the front of the phone that houses the True Depth, camera system, the speakers and the ambient light sensor. The case was designed to show off the bright colours of the device. The case was released in October, two months after the launching of the phone. It comes with a glass body in six colours plus a matching 7000 series frame. The frame is lighter and less expensive than the stainless-steel frame of the XS. The glass back phones could easily crack or break if drop on the floor especially therefore be careful.

Water and Dust Resistance

It’s IP67 water and dust resistance in other words, it’s immune from dust and will survive immersion in water of up to one metre (3.3 feet) deep for 30 minutes in laboratory conditions. Even though the phone has a high-level resistance to splashes, rain and accidental exposure to water, intentional exposure must be avoided at all cost. Apple’s warranty does not cover water damage to IOS devices so be careful when around liquids.

Display

The LCD features several technological advancements which makes it larger than ever and regarded it as the most advanced LCD in a smart phone. Apple says there were new innovations for pixel antialiasing and pixel masking to extend the display to the edges of the device. LEDs that fit into smaller spaces than ever before were used plus a new backlight design to enlarge display and reach the corners of the phone.

Haptic Touch

The haptic touch option replaced the 3D touch feature, the company says this is similar to the haptic track pad in the MacBook Pro. The 3D touch is available throughout the IOS 12 operating system and is often used to display more information through a force press gesture. This feature is not available via the haptic touch, but the haptic touch provides feedback when pressing the camera icon forcefully on the lock screen

There’s a rumour that the 3D touch will be eliminated on future handsets and most likely be replaced by the haptic touch option in the iPhone XR. Apple might also have a plan to add more features to the haptic touch.

A12 Bionic Processor

This bionic processor can harness all six cores at once when a power boost is required. Functionalities are divided across the core through a new controller for the best performance and battery life. The A12 bionic produces faster detection of AR surfaces for the rear camera, better AR experiences for the front camera as well, immersive 3D gaming and faster face ID.

Face ID and True Depth Camera System

The introduction of the iPhone X in 2017 came with it the face ID. This is the biometric verification system used in the iPhone XR. It features a notch housing true depth camera system that enables face ID.

●        Face ID is the same thing as touch ID excepts:

●        It uses a facial scan instead of a finger print.

●        It’s the same as iPhone X with better performance.

●        Face ID can detect your face and unlock your device faster because of the new A12 bionic chip and neutral engine improvements.

●        Face ID is used across the IOS operating system for tasks such as unlocking the phone.

●        It gives access to third party passcode protected apps.

The True Depth, camera has a set of sensors which the face ID works through. If you want to create a facial scan, a Dot projects more than 30,000 invincible infrared dots onto your face and then read by an infrared camera. The depth map on your face is repaid to the A12 bionic processor and then transformed into a mathematical model, the phone uses this to ensure you’re trying to access your phone.

Face ID has no problem functioning to the ultimate in dark or dim light areas because of the infrared and a built in floor illuminator. They provide adequate light to the facial scan, face ID works with:

●        Hats

●        Beards

●        Glasses

●        Shades

●        Scarves

●        Make up

●        And all other accessories

Face ID and Security Privacy

Face ID cannot be fooled by a photo mask or other facial imitation because of a detailed 3D facial scan. Face ID allows you to unlock your device through an “Attention Aware” security feature, your device will unlock only when you look in the direction of your phone with your eyes open. This feature will work when:

●        Asleep.

●        Unconscious.

●        Eyes closed.

●        Look away from your phone.

You’re able to turn off the attention aware just in case you’re unable to focus on the phone’s screen. Most prefer to turn it on because of added security. The Attention Aware feature knows when you’re looking at your phone. Face ID displays notification and messages on the lock screen when looking at the phone, therefore lights the screen and lowers the volume automatically.

You’ll be glad to know that Face ID data is encrypted and stored in a secured enclaved on your phone. Authentication is only effective on the phone, Face ID data are not stored anywhere in the cloud nor uploaded to Apple. Third Parties developers do not have access to the facial map that face IID requires to unlock the device.

There’s a 1 in 1,000,000 chances that someone might trick the Face, ID, research shows 1 in 500,000 with an alternate appearance registered with IOS 12. Face ID has been deceived by identical twins, carefully crafted mask. In spite of all of these, you don’t have to worry about your iPhone being unlocked easily by someone else.

Conclusion

You can’t go wrong with the superb screen design; the battery has the longest span among the iPhone models and a faster performance. The phone was made with the most durable front glass ever in a smartphone. Security is simplified if your face is your password, it’s the most secure facial authentication ever in a smartphone.
